In her quiet, light-filled studio in Cologne, German designer Meike Harde shapes furniture that balances clarity and warmth. Since founding her studio in 2016, Harde has surrounded herself with sketches, materials, and tools, creating an environment where focus and creativity naturally unfold.

Her latest collaboration with Northern resulted in Gem, a soft seating series of sofas, chairs and a pouf defined by sculptural volumes and inviting comfort. With its appealing deep seat, embracing wide backrest and low curved arms, the Gem Sofa offers the utmost in comfort and cosiness and is perfectly suited for lounging, napping, or socialising. The latest addition to the series is the shorter 3-seater sofa.

“The development process with Gem was very smooth,” she recalls. “I was very much integrated, and I really liked the friendly and down-to-earth atmosphere.”

Harde’s design process is disciplined yet fluid. Mornings begin quietly. A glass of water and checking emails before immersing herself in the most important tasks of the day. She guards her creative energy through small breaks, music, and healthy meals. Ideas often surface when she least expects them, sometimes even waking her at night.

Working with design brands offers Harde both challenge and reward. “I enjoy learning how different brands think and what they need, especially when they put so much effort into all the little details,” she says. With Gem, those details come together in a collection that feels timeless yet personal, much like Harde’s own approach to design.
